Evalina and I: Crimes, Quilts, and Art, 1975–80, Photo Quilts
Lacy met Evalina Newman during an artist residency at the Guy Miller Homes, the urban housing project in Watts, Los Angeles, where Newman lived. As their relationship deepened through everyday rituals such as riding the bus together, grocery shopping, doctor’s visits, and shared meals, they designed and collaborated on a variety of activities, installations, and performances. Among them was a sewing club Newman organized for residents to make quilts for senior citizens. These photo-quilts (a set of five in all) by Lacy chronicle her interactions with Newman and other residents of the Guy Miller Homes, addressing issues of community, poverty, and racism.
